re you sick of those Windows balloons telling you that you have unused icons on your desktop or that your LAN is connected? I don't doubt that about 1 in 100 people finds the notifications useful, but for the other 99 of us, here's a way to pop the balloons once and for all.

Follow these steps (note: this has been tested only on Windows XP):

* Go to Start > Run; type regedit and press Enter.
* In the Registry Editor, navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ Advanced
* Create a new DWORD value by going to Edit > New > DWORD Value. Name it EnableBalloonTips and give it value 0.
* Exit the Registry Editor.
* Log off Windows and login again to see your changes take effect.

To re-activate balloon notifications, change the value of EnableBalloonTips to 1.

Scarface will be released on october 3

" LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - After a full year of delay, Vivendi Games finally will ship "Scarface: The World Is Yours" on October 3.

Hollywood scribe David McKenna ("Blow," "American History X") wrote the script for this new interactive experience, but has mixed feelings about Hollywood's dipping into the archives for games.

"When you think about 'Jaws' and 'The Godfather,' although they were great movies, I don't see them in the same vein as something like what they're doing with 'Scarface,"' McKenna said. "It's getting to the point where you're just bastardizing the whole business just to make a buck. That's fine, but I think the American public is a little too smart for that. I don't think every movie makes a good video game, just like not every story makes a good movie."

McKenna believes the "Scarface" film was uniquely suited to be a video game because the film is entirely from the viewpoint of Al Pacino's Tony Montana, and because Montana is so violent and darkly funny. He also thinks that what developer Radical has done with this game is brilliant. He said he especially loves the Rage meter, which allows the player to build up Montana's anger and then go ballistic on his enemies with a stream of bullets and obscenities.

McKenna, who's not a gamer, learned a lot about the game development process over the past few years as "Scarface" was built from the ground up around his script.

"When you're making a movie, you can make one in three or four months if you're rushed, but building a game takes several years and a lot of attention to detail," McKenna said. "What they've done in this game is amazing. There are certain things you can buy in this game, including Manny's and Tina's ashes. That's the type of details these guys have come up with."

Vivendi was able to attract a huge cast of Hollywood actors and musicians, including Cheech Marin, Jay Mohr, Jerry Ferrara, Kevin Dillon and uncredited celebrity cameos. McKenna said he loved the way the dialogue between the characters came alive on the screen.

"It's almost like the player is writing his own script in many ways," McKenna said. "The game makers are giving him guidance. These video game guys are amazing -- they're incredible to work with."

" - A Brazilian referee faced suspension on Tuesday after she awarded a goal that television pictures showed was scored by a ball boy.

The 89th minute goal allowed Santacruzense to snatch a 1-1 draw at home to Atletico Sorocaba in the Paulista Football Federation (FPF) Cup on Sunday, a regional tournament played in the state of Sao Paulo.

Pictures showed that after a Santacruzense player shot narrowly wide, the boy collected the ball with his feet and took it back on to the pitch.

However, instead of returning it to the goalkeeper, he subtly tapped it across the line into the net.

Although there was nearly 10 seconds between the shot going out and the boy placing the ball over the line, referee Silvia Regina de Oliveira awarded a goal amid furious Sorocaba protests.

Oliveira, who has refereed in the Brazilian first division and the Copa Sudamericana, said she based her decision on the linesman.

"I should have trusted my own vision," Oliveira said in a radio interview."

Microsoft delivers 'Save as PDF' add-on

Microsoft has released a free download that will enable Office 2007 users to save documents in both Adobe Systems' PDF format and Microsoft's own rival format, XPS.

The add-on works with the different planned versions of Office 2007, which is now in beta testing and expected to be made generally available by the end of the year.

According to the release notes of the download, people can save a document or send an e-mail attachment in PDF or XPS format.

AT&T to offer 20 TV channels for PC viewing

AT&T said on Tuesday it will launch a new Internet browser-based television service that will allow subscribers to watch 20 channels, including Fox News and the Weather Channel, on their computers.

The live TV service, named AT&T Broadband TV, will be available to high-speed Internet users at $19.99 a month, adding to AT&T's lineup of video products to meet growing demand for mobile and over-the-Web entertainment.

Although the service does not work overseas, AT&T said one target customer group would be U.S. travelers, who will be able to watch live TV on their laptops as long as their Internet connection speed is at least 500 kilobits per second.
